Making your own breadcrumbs is super easy, and one of the great things about it is, you’ll never have to throw bread away again!

According to Love Food Hate Waste NZ, bread is the number 1 food item Kiwis throw away the most, adding up to an equivalent of 29 million loaves of bread a year!!!

If you find yourself always throwing bread in the bin because it’s gone dried, stale or mouldy, or even just the bread crusts from the kids’ sammies, making your own BREADCRUMBS could be a good solution.

First of all, to avoid bread going off, keep bread crusts, day old rolls, or any bread that has passed its prime in the fridge or freezer, until you’re ready to make the breadcrumbs.

To make breadcrumbs:

1. Torn bread into chunks and place chunks in a blender or food processor.

2. Whizz until all bread has turned into crumbs. You may need to do this in batches, depending on how much bread you have. Breadcrumbs are now ready to use in any recipe requiring fresh breadcrumbs.

3. If you’d like to store breadcrumbs, place them on a flat tray and leave it in a dry place for a few hours or overnight, until they’re completely dried. Basically, you want to ensure there’s no moisture left in the crumbs, so they don’t go mouldy. Store breadcrumbs in an airtight jar or container.
