These bath bombs are very easy to make and require only a few ingredients, most of which you probably have on hand. To make them even more special and enhance their texture and colour, we added in some dried herbs and dried flower petals from the garden but be aware these will come out in your bath water!

The children were able to help mix all the ingredients and press the mixture into the moulds. We found the large mould in the picture above worked best (Giant Ice Cube Tray, $2 each, from Kmart) - we also tried smaller silicone moulds but found they were a bit too tricky for little fingers and the mixture didn’t hold together well. If you don’t have a large mould like this, a silicone muffin tray would work just as well!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1/2 cup citric (or tartaric) acid

  • 1/2 cup Epsom salts (you can also use table salt, or ground pink Himalayan salt, as we did, for a nice colour)

  • 1/2 cup cornflour

  • 2-3 tablespoons oil (we used melted coconut oil, but any liquid oil will work)

  • 8 - 10 drops essential oil (we used lavender, but you could also use dried ground ginger, or other spices/ essential oils of your choice)

  • 2-3 teaspoons water

  • A selection of dried herbs and dried flowers petals (optional) - we used dried thyme, rosemary, lavender flowers and crumbled rose petals

Method:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients (baking soda, salt, citric acid, cornflour) in a medium sized mixing bowl.

  2. Melt the oil, if needed (we used a microwave to melt the coconut oil.

  3. Mix the wet ingredients (oil, essential oil and water) separately, in a small bowl until well combined.

  4. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.

  5. Add any dried herbs and/ or flower petals (if using) and mix through.

  6. The mixture should hold together when squeezed - as in the picture above.. In case it’s too dry, add a little bit more oil and/or water, until you get the right consistency.

  7. Spoon the mixture into the moulds and press down to compact it, Allow to dry overnight.

These bath bombs smell lovely and fizz when you pop them into the bath. Children will really enjoy creating these beautifully scented gifts for their mums, grandmothers or even themselves! They’ll also be able to practice essential cooking skills like measuring, mixing, kneading, and moulding, without the health and safety concerns of creating an edible product. Plus, children will feel empowered to be able to pamper their loved ones!

To make our Scented Garden Bath Bombs gifts extra special, we wrapped them in tissue paper and decorated with a coloured love heart which we tied with natural twine. ;)
